The Retina is a thin layer of Light Sensitive Tissue on the back wall of the Eye. The Optical System of the Eye Focuses light on the Retina much like Light is Focused on the Film in a Camera. The Retina translates that focused image into Neural Impulses and sends them to the brain via the Optic Nerve. Occasionally, Posterior Vitreous Detachment, Injury or Trauma to the Eye or Head may cause a Small Tear in the Retina. The Tear allows Vitreous fluid to seep through it under the Retina, and Peel it away like a Bubble in Wallpaper.
Retinal Detachment is a Disorder of the Eye in which the Retina Separates from its Underlying Layer of Support Tissue. Initial Detachment may be Localized, but without rapid treatment the Entire Retina may detach, Leading to Vision Loss and Blindness. Retinal Detachment is a Medical Emergency.
A Cataract is the clouding of the Eye’s Naturally Clear Lens. The Lens is part of the Eye that helps Focus Light on the Retina. The Retina is a Light Sensitive Layer of tissue lining the Inner Surface of the Eye. The Optics of the Eye Create an image of the visual world on the retina through the cornea and lens. The clouding caused by a cataract reduces the sharpness of images reflected in the retina resulting in blurred vision. Most Cataracts are related to aging, usually starting at age 40. Cataracts are so common that by age 80 more than half of all Americans either have a Cataract or have already had Cataract Surgery.
An Orthopedic Surgeon, or Orthopaedic Surgeon, is a Surgeon who has been educated and trained in the Diagnosis and Preoperative, Operative, and Postoperative Treatment of Diseases and Injuries of the Musculoskeletal System.
With increase in Longevity, more number of Senior Citizens Demand a Better Quality of Life. Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. In the past, this technique was commonly used for gynecologic surgery and for gall bladder surgery. Over the last 10 years the use of this technique has expanded into intestinal surgery. In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a “port.” At each port a tubular instrument known as a trochar is inserted. Specialized instruments and a special camera known as a laparoscope are passed through the trochars during the procedure. At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. The laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to high-resolution video monitors in the operating room. During the operation the surgeon watches detailed images of the abdomen on the monitor. This system allows the surgeon to perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions.
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure performed by Orthopaedic Surgeons to view, diagnose and treat joint problems. The term Arthroscopy comes from two Greek words, ‘arthro’ (joint) and ‘skopein’ (to look). The term simply means ‘to look inside the joint.’
Arthroscopic surgery has revolutionised the diagnosis and management of joint problems. Initially used only as a diagnostic tool prior to open surgery, the availability of better instruments and techniques has encouraged the use of arthroscopy for treating a variety of joint problems, avoiding complicated surgeries and longer recovery. In fact, except joint replacement and major intra-articular fractures, all other problems involving the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow and wrist joint can be treated with arthroscopic surgery.
Surgical Oncology is the branch of Surgery applied to Oncology; it focuses on the Surgical management of Tumors, especially Cancerous Tumors.
As one of several modalities in the management of Cancer, the specialty of Surgical Oncology, before modern medicine the only Cancer treatment with a chance of success, has evolved in steps similar to Medical Oncology (Pharmacotherapy for Cancer), which grew out of Hematology, and Radiation Oncology, which grew out of Radiology. The Ewing Society known today as the Society of Surgical Oncology was started by Surgeons interested in promoting the field of Oncology. Complex General Surgical Oncology was ratified by a Specialty Board Certification in 2011 from the American Board of Surgery. The Proliferation of Cancer centers will continue to popularize the field, as will developments in minimally Invasive Techniques, Palliative Surgery, and Neo-Adjuvant Treatments.
